Bridging History and Public Understanding

On January 12, 1865, Garrison Frazier led 20 Black ministers in negotiating land for freedpeople with General Sherman and Secretary Stanton. Days later, Sherman issued Special Field Order No. 15, promising 40 acres per family. Though later revoked, it became a lasting symbol of service in the cause of the people, Black self-sufficiency and broken Reconstruction promises.
